On the 15th January, 2016, Biocentury organized its Annual Meeting of Biotech Research Center in the headquater participated by CEO Dr YANG, Dr Hongzhi CUI (Director of the Center), Mr Zhenming ZHU (Chief breeder of cotton & canola), Mr Yuhui WANG (Chief Administration Officer), research staff of the Biotech Research Center and the Germplasm Improvement Center.
At the beginning, CEO Dr Yang appreciated the effort and tremendous contributions of all the research staff and asked all participants to summarize the progresses and achievements on the insect resistance, stress tolerance and herbicide tolerance and exchange new ideas about future research. In addition, he pointed out that Biocentury has fully supported biotech R&D, and will provide even better space and conditions in the new Biocentury Seed Building (in progress) to speed up the R&D process. He further emphasized the importance of Biosafety Evaluation and all research staff shall contribute to its success.
Projects reported at the meeting include: stress-specific promoters, transgenic maize, cotton quality improvement genes, salt tolerant genes, ALS point mutation, herbicide tolerance, drought tolerance and insect resistance. Presenters and participants exchanged ideas passionately with numerous new ideas. There have been major progresses in cotton insect resistance, herbicide tolerance and drought tolerance, and future work include full data collection and Biosafety Evaluation. Efforts must be made to achieve breakthroughs in maize transformation, and there are potentials for commercial application for ALS point mutation, drought tolerance and rice disease resistance.
For conclusion, CEO Dr Yang analyzed and summarized the key issues of the projects, and asked R&D staff to design their projects and experiments properly with precise and workable technical approaches, to collect experimental data timely and completely, and to discuss and exchange ideas with fellow researchers. In addition, he pointed out that research projects shall follow the 80/20 rule, and the current key projects are insect resistance, drought tolerance and herbicide resistance. Thirdly, he requested that Improvements on project plan and management need to be made along with cooperation and information exchange between different departments to speed up the research process. Finally, he said the management system needs to be further improved, problems and difficult issues need to be recorded properly to be solved step by step.
At the meeting, research staff team were encouraged and inspired by CEO Dr Yang and will do their best in the future to achieve greater success.
